IMO Classes - International Maritime Organisation (short description)

Provisions of the application and design of portable tankcontainer as addressed in the UN recommendation for the transportation of dangerous goods.

IMO Type 1 Tank / Tankcontainer
referred to an portable tank approved for the transportation of substances of class 1 and classes 3 to 9, fitted with pressure relief devices and minimum allowable working pressure of 1.75 bar up to 6.80 bar (100 psig).

IMO Type 2 Tank / Tankcontainer
referred to an portable tank approved for the transportation of substances of class 3 with low hazardous level or other approved substances, fitted with pressure relief devices and maximum allowable working pressure of more than 1.00 bar and up to 1.75 bar.

IMO Type 4 Tank / Road tank - vehicles
referred to road tank-vehicles approved for the transportation of substances of class 3 to 9, including road semi-trailer with permanent attached shell or tanks with not less than 4 twist locks secured to an chassis according to ISO Norm (for example international ISO Norm 1161, 1984), fitted with pressure relief devices and maximum allowable working pressure of 1.75 bar or more.

IMO Type 5 Tank / Tankcontainer
referred to an portable tank approved for the transportation of non refrigerated liquefied gases of class 2, or other approved substances, fitted with pressure relief and/or other substance related safety features and maximum allowable working pressure setting as specified by design.

IMO Type 6 Tank / Road tank - vehicles
referred to an road tank-vehicle approved for the transportation of non refrigerated liquefied gases of class 2 , including road semi-trailer with permanent attached shell or tanks attached to an chassis, with operating equipment and design features required for the transportation of gases, and maximum allowable working pressure setting as specified by design.

IMO Type 7 Tank / Tankcontainer
referred to an portable thermally insulated tank fitted with operating equipment and design features required for the transportation of refrigerated liquefied gases. The tank must be suitable to be transported, loaded or discharged without removal of any design features and to be lifted in loaded condition, fitted with pressure relief devices and/or other substance related safety features, and maximum allowable working pressure setting as specified by design.

IMO Type 8 Tank / Road tank - vehicles
referred to an thermally insulated road tank-vehicle, including road semi-vehicles with permanent attached shell, fitted with operating equipment and design features required for the transportation of refrigerated liquefied gases and pressure relief devices and/or other substance related safety features, and maximum allowable working pressure setting as specified by design.

Remarks: Portable UN-tanks and UN-MEGC, designed and manufactured by Code prior to the 1th of January 2008 are still permitted for usage, provided that appropriate regulatory compliance concerning repeated surveying and testing procedures are fulfilled.
